Poppyscotland Sportive

The Poppyscotland Sportive starts and finishes at Prestonpans Community Centre, taking riders through the stunning countryside of East Lothian and the Borders. Now in it’s fifth year, the three different routes provide a real challenge for riders of all abilities:

Short route (77km) – perfect for the 1st time Sportive rider.Follow the beautiful and famous East Lothian Golf Coast Road and then head up into some hills via Gifford to test the legs. It’s generally downhill from here back to the coast at Longniddry and to the finish.

Medium Route (110km) – a fairly tough ride awaits you after the flat ride out to North Berwick. Things kick upwards from there with a long climb up into the Lammermuirs and over the infamous ‘Rigg’. But then it’s pretty much downhill all the way back but with a couple of ‘testers’ on the way.

Long Route (162km) - a truly epic day in the saddle awaits after the flat ride out to North Berwick. Then you’re up and over the Lammermuirs and down onto the delightfully quiet roads of the Scottish Borders.  Loop round by Chirnside before refuelling at Duns for the long haul back over the hills into East Lothian.

Gran Fondo Scotland

THE EVENT

A Gran Fondo is a type of long-distance road cycling event of at least 120 kilometres (75 mi) long originating in Italy and roughly translates into English as “Big Ride”.  The starts are done en masse, and the format allows for riders of every level to participate, like a marathon, where most participants are competing against the clock instead of other participants.  Traditionally a large meal is served to the participants at the end of the event.

127KM GRAN FONDO ROUTE

Starting at the Kelpies, riders can enjoy the scenic route out towards Stirling before heading west where the road begins to climb around the Carron Valley Reservoir.  We chose this part of the course after being inspired by the lakes of Italy.  Riders will then take on the challenging Crow Road with characteristics of the shallow yet long lower French Alpine slopes.  This road is also where Britains only Tour de France King of the Mountains jersey winner formerly known as Robert Millar previously trained.

On route, stop off at our feed station to refuel before taking on the Tak-Ma-Doon climb then afterwards, the peaceful winding roads will take you back into Falkirk where you can finish your day with true  “Italian Panache” at our Pasta Party Celebration, a Gran Fondo favourite, at The Falkirk Stadium.

86KM MEDIO FONDO ROUTE

The 86km route follows the same course as the 127km route but loops back towards The Falkirk Stadium from Carron Bridge 27km into the ride.  Participants in this event can still challenge themselves in Gran Fondo style on the 6.5km Strava timed section within the route and finish off the day with food and entertainment at the Pasta Party Celebration at the Falkirk Stadium.

Standard entry costs £29 and includes:

– Well stocked feed stations along the route.

– GPS file of the event.

– Mechanical support before and during the event however, please ensure that you carry spare tubes and a small pump in your back pocket at all times as tubes will not be provided.

– First aid and safety provision around the course.

– Toilet facilities at the event HQ.

– Service support vehicle will be on course.

– Fantastic photo opportunity memento of the day and Pasta Party.
